What inspired her to start:

I've always been doing music and been into music. My family, they weren't musicians and singers per se, but they were music lovers - so I just grew up around music all the time. But I think what really gave me the confidence to do it was in 10th grade, I heard On & On by Erykah Badu on the radio, and then I saw the video, and I was like, "Yea! I can do that!" Up until that point, I didn't really connect with anybody that was like really their own artist, that was doing something nobody else was doing. When I saw her and heard her, I just instantly connected. I've been a poet for a while [myself], so I just felt like we were just sharing the same frequency; That really gave me the confidence to go out there and be like, "Oh, I can do what I do, the way that I do it, and people will love it, the same way she does her thing and people love it."

Her advice to you:

I would say the most important thing is to support and rejoice in other people's happiness and other people's successes and other people's virtuous actions. If we can't genuinely be happy for other people, then we won't attract any great energy into our art or whatever we're doing. Especially as women, we definitely need to stick together and support each other more. There's room for all of us, no matter what we're doing. So I think that's always important.

Also, being true to yourself. We've [JDavey] always been about that - just sticking to our guns and doing what we want to do. Especially, if you're doing something nobody else is doing you know, like Prince. For years he would get boo'ed off stage and nobody really liked what he was doing or what he was wearing, but he was just so confident and just kept selling it, that after a while it was like, you can't deny this guy's talent and everyone caught on. So even if it takes people a while, just always stick to what you do.
